Until we moved to Annapolis for the first time in 1999, I didn't know what a big deal May day was.
Businesses and downtown homeowners go to great lengths to create beautiful and creative baskets to display on May 1.
This is one of a pair that graced the gates at the Naval Academy. The Garden Club takes care of these.
The basket with the long blue and gold ribbons showed up on my door for May Day. I suspect I know who the May Day basket fairy was, but she hasn't 'fessed up yet. I'll wear her down. . .
I think it was she-who-helped-with-my-guest room. I'm still in the throes of moving in and getting settled and just generally being overwhelmed with the sheer magnitude of junk interesting stuff and dust in my house. My parents came in from Texas last Wednesday, and she helped me get the guest room prepared for them. All I want to say about that is Thank God for generous friends who have enormous reserves of talent and creativity! Here are a few photos of the transformation. (Keep in mind that this is the room you last saw here: Fortunately, hel p arrived and now this room looks like this:
I wonder if Doojie recognizes the chicken feeder above. I bought it last year at NeNe's fabulous sale.
So - - the guest room is up and running. Wish the rest of the house was.
Back to work!
Wow, love the room, what a great job she did! Yes, I remember the chicken feeder which I had for a very long time and paid way too much for but I thought it was the coolest thing. So glad it took the coolest kinda Texas gal to realize what the potential was.

Oops, me again. I can't believe you didn't know about May Day. Growing up in Texas we made little May baskets at school then on the way home I'd pick flowers (probably dandelions), then put them on the front door, ring the bell, and my mom would answer all surprised. I loved it! Even when my older boys were in elementary in California they had a May pole and did the May Pole Dance (yep, boys and all) and had refreshments and activities for a couple of hours during the school day. It was when we moved here that no one I knew had heard of it. I'm so glad to hear that the tradition lives on, it's such a sweet sentiment. Next year I'll have to come over that way and see how y'all do it and we can grab some cup cakes to add to the fun!
