One of the challenges in making each new house a home, is the fact that rarely will any window shade, curtain, blind or scarf that has EVER worked before in any previous house, work in your current house. I keep all of them, though, because I'm optimistic. I really believe, that someday, somewhere, I will live in a home where all of the window treatments from my past will align in some harmonic convergence and without effort, swearing or trips to Bed, Bath and Beyond, will all fit - perfectly.
Until that happens, I will continue to seek out thrifty but chic dressing for my windows. I picked up the Brunschwig and Fils fabric at a antique/consignment/junk shop last week and it was a steal. It's about 5 yards of unused fabric in great condition. Today I picked up the tassel trim and the plaid in the background, as well as roman shade tape and drapery liner fabric. My plan is to make a simple Roman shade that will be mounted on a 1 X 4 pine board that I've covered in the liner fabric. I'll mount it inside the window frame with angle brackets, and then insert eye hooks on each end of the bottom of the 1 X 4 to thread the cord through. Some Roman shades have multiple strips of the ring tape, and that makes for a more fussy shade, and I want this to be more tailored. I'll have a strip on either side, and the shade will draw up gently on each side. There are other advantages to using only one tape on each side - it's less expensive, and does less to disrupt the fabric. That way, if I need to re-purpose the fabric at a future home, I will still have a length of fabric to use!
